BioTrap, innovation in wastewater treatment
BioTrap is a new competitive Dutch wastewater purification technology with the potential to be applied in a broad work field, industrial as well as municipal.
Brightwork developed this new concept for treatment of industrial- and municipal wastewater. The key of the technology is a sludge-on-carrier biofilm technology. A number of new process and reactor features make this technology useful for the purpose of primary wastewater treatment. A considerable advantage, with respect to conventional systems, is that the efficiency is higher which means that this technology can process significantly higher loads.
BioTrap is a very compact purification technology in which, under actual process conditions, the ratio between the anoxic and aerobic zones can be adjusted. Besides an altered design of the reactor, there will be an extensive study into increasing the activity of the biomass with the help of low frequency vibration energy. The prognosis is that due to the low frequency vibration energy a more efficient oxygen transfer, and a natural selection of biomass will occur, such that the conversion speed of biodegradable material increases.
For the development of the BioTrap technology an ideal consortium was created: technology supplier (Brightwork) – producer (Vconsyst Enginering) – constructor (D&M engineers) – knowledge institute (Van Hall Larenstein) – launching customer (Schaap Holland BV).
Mid March 2010 a start was made with laboratory research into the effect of low frequency vibration on biomass and oxygen transfer in the reactor. The technical and technological design will be further refined based on the results. End 2010 a pilot installation will be taken into service and during 6 to 8 months extended research will be done on a representative scale. Based on the results of the pilot research, a first prototype will be erected at Schaap Holland BV, Biddinghuizen. There additional research will take place during 12 months.
